St George’s Hospital

They provide:

St George’s is the regional specialist centre for both inpatient and outpatient services for south west London, Surrey and Sussex, serving a population of more than 3.5 million people. The Atkinson Morley Regional Neurosciences Centre at St George’s Hospital is an internationally renowned unit for neurology, neurosurgery, neurorehabilitation and stroke services. The hospital offers comprehensive services for the diagnosis, treatment and care of all conditions that affect the brain, spinal cord and the peripheral nervous system and muscles.

Queen Mary’s Hospital (Roehampton)

They provide:

Part of the St George’s, Epsom and St Helier Hospital Group in the same Trust as St George’s Hospital, Queen Mary’s provides specialist rehabilitation services (Wolfson Neurorehabilitation Centre).

Croydon University Hospital

They provide:

  • 5 days a week inpatient neurology input to wards/AMU
  • General neurology clinics
  • Regular epilepsy (including first fit clinics), Parkinson’s and MS clinics
  • Nurse-led headache clinics
  • Elective lumbar puncture clinic

Kingston Hospital

They provide:

Their team consist of six consultant neurologists and specialist nurses in epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease as well as a Consultant Neurophysiologist and a Neurophysiologist. They provide outpatient clinics at the hospital and Raynes Park Health Centre and also provide a liaison service for inpatients at Kingston Hospital who have neurological problems.

They deliver advice, diagnosis and management for a range of conditions, including:

  • Seizures
  • Headaches
  • Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Disorders of the muscles and peripheral nerves

St Helier Hospital

They provide:

The most common illnesses they assess and manage are headaches, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, dementia and degenerative diseases, multiple sclerosis and traumatic brain injury.

They work closely with colleagues in the Stroke service, Radiology and Neurophysiology. The St Helier site has a specialist inpatient neuro-rehabilitation team, made up of highly specialist occupational therapy, physiotherapy and speech therapy. The team’s role is to provide specialist assessment, rehabilitation and pathway planning for patients with neurological conditions. They work closely with the neurology consultants, ward teams and community neuro therapy teams in Sutton, Merton and other surrounding areas. The team also maintain close links with St George’s hospital and other specialist neuro-rehabilitation centres.

Royal Surrey Hospital

They provide:

Their inpatient services offer in-reach to all wards for patients referred with a neurological condition. Their outpatient services offer clinic appointments to all patients referred via GP or consultant. They offer specialist nurse clinics for those with an existing diagnosis of epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis.

How to refer:

They take referrals from GPs via the national eRS, and from other consultants via letter or email to our medical secretary team. Two-week rule referrals are via eRS using the appropriate referral form and strict inclusion criteria. They also offer an advice and guidance service via the eRS system.

Epsom Hospital

They provide:

East Surrey Hospital

They provide:

The department consists of three consultant staff and includes visiting consultants in neuroradiology (Dr R Gunny) and neurophysiology (Dr H Modarres) based primarily at other hospitals. As well as general neurology clinics, a range of specialist outpatient clinics are provided. There are also a number of clinical nurse specialists who provide a range of outpatient clinics.

The department has strong links with the Atkinson Morley Regional Neurosciences Centre based at St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (London); and works closely with other services including Neurophysiology, Neuroradiology, Neuropsychology, Neuropsychiarty and Neurosurgery at both St George’s Hospital (London) and Hurstwood Park Neurosciences Centre (West Sussex).

  • General neurology clinics – every day, Monday to Thursday
  • Specialist neurology clinics:
    • Movement disorders (including Parkinson’s) –  specialist outpatient clinic runs twice every month
    • MS – this clinic runs once every other month.
    • Multiple Sclerosis Nurse Specialist Clinics – Nurse specialists review patients face-to-face in clinic, in addition to telephone clinics and email contact. This helps enable patients with Multiple Sclerosis manage their condition outside of hospitals.
  • Regional neurology ward at St George’s Hospital for the treatment of complex neurological conditions.
  • Advice to GPs within East Surrey, North-East Wessex and South Croydon areas.

Crawley Hospital

They provide:

Outpatient clinics only, including a specialist clinic providing Botulinum Toxin (Botox) Therapy – this clinic is run once every 11-12 weeks.

Frimley Park Hospital

They provide:

Frimley Health offers a mainly outpatient-based neurology service, as well as providing a daily ward consultation service five days a week.

Specialist neurology inpatients are looked after at the Atkinson Morley Wing at St George’s Hospital, Tooting.

Neurology has strong links with the radiology department, which offers CT (computerised tomography) scans and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scans. EMG tests (electromyography – an evaluation of the electrical activity produced by skeletal muscles) are carried out at Wexham Park Hospital and Charing Cross, London.
